Overcome the Thanksgiving Hangover

by Glen Depke, Traditional Naturopath Thanksgiving is often a very enjoyable time of the year. Good friends, family, good food, some holiday spirits and some yummy pies (hopefully gluten free as we enjoyed at our home.) Very often there are parties on Friday for many families but there’s so much more. The Black Friday shopping, getting some incredible deals for some early Christmas shopping or perhaps a little some thing for yourself or your home. This all sounds awesome but there is often one problem with Thanksgiving. This is most often the beginning of some very poor habits that will last into the new year, in the end, leaving us overweight, inflamed and just simply, feeling poorly. This is the Thanksgiving hangover I am mentioning and this hangover is typically lasting about 6 weeks. Yikes! So how do we get our Thanksgiving hangover a little shot in the arm? First off, stop the madness with food consumption. I understand that there are starving people in this world, my mother used to tell me this as a child to get me to eat everything off my plate, but the reality is, starving people in this world does not mean that we should over eat and gorge ourselves. If you still have Thanksgiving left overs in your refrigerators at the time you are reading this article, it is time to pitch them. You don’t have to continue to force something down that you have already eaten likely every day since Thursday. Another reason to let this go is due to a likelihood of the development of detrimental bacteria (food poisoning) with too many left overs being consumed past their prime. I had multiple cases of likely food poisoning recognized today with clients. So pitch the left overs unless you already have them nicely frozen in individual packets in your freezer. Now if you are one of the unlucky ones that have noticed stomach distress, bloating and/or diarrhea, there is something simple that you can do to assist your body in overcoming food poisoning. Most food poisoning is simply detrimental bacteria and you can assist your body in getting back into GI balance by taking large doses of beneficial bacteria. Most general recommendation for clients, again to assist your body in overcoming food poisoning naturally, is to take a 100 billion count of beneficial bacteria upon recognition of symptoms and another 100 billion just before you go to bed. This aggressive load of good bacteria will work as an antagonist to the bad bacteria and may the best bacteria win. Usually the beneficial bacteria! To do this all you have to take is 5 capsules of the Depke Wellness Prebioitic/Probiotic Formula as mentioned above, upon recognition of symptoms and before bed. Most of the time you will wake up the next morning and as is right in your gut, which is always nice. If you happen to still have GI issues, you may want to seek the attention of a qualified health practitioner just in case you have something more serious such as a parasite, protozoa, H-pylori infection or any other gut pathogen. Trust me, your better safe than sorry. It is also important to break the eating frenzy because this gets out of control. Personally, I ate and drank far too much this past weekend. Between Thanksgiving and a complete weekend celebration for my wife’s birthday on Sunday, the food and drink was simply overwhelming. At this point, we have two choices during the holidays. Most people chose to suck it up and go with it throughout the holiday season. After all there are tons of parties, lots of food and seemingly an unlimited supply of alcohol at this time of the year. As mentioned earlier in the article, this leaves us overweight, inflamed and just simply, feeling poorly. And all of a sudden it is mid January and we wonder why even our “fat” jeans don’t fit any more. Many of you know exactly what I am talking about, I have been there myself in the past. There is another option though. As example, after the feeding frenzy and over consumption of alcohol from Thursday thru Sunday, I have given up all grains, potatoes and alcohol for the week. This coming Friday is our holiday party at the office and I will have some wine there, but the five day hiatus, will bring some balance back to my gut, health and life. Too many people simply do not recognize how quickly the body will bounce back, but you have to give it a chance. By the way, if you happen to live in the Orange County California area, you are welcome to join us at our holiday party. You can enjoy some wine, cheese and chocolate while also engaging with like minded individuals and have the opportunity to converse with some of our world’s leaders in health and wellness. So be sure to take your health hiatus between your parties and gatherings and provide the well needed break between the many over indulgences you will have in the next 6 weeks. If you don’t head this warning, you will end up overweight, inflamed and just simply, feeling poorly. You can almost bet on it.
