What Can You Tell By Looking Under Your Tongue?

by Glen Depke, Traditional Naturopath

Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, looking under your tongue can provide quite a bit of insight regarding your health.

Before we dive into the picture below, understand that what you would expect to see when you look under the tongue is two veins coming up from the base of the tongue, with one vein in each side of the mid point of the tongue. Also, these veins would each be singular veins, a light to medium blue in color without much protrusion and no branching of the veins. There should also

Take a look at this picture here.

As you can see in this picture, the veins are protruding a bit, there is also quite a bit of branching and the color is a darker blue.

These are potential signs of blood stagnation and liver congestion.

Also the reddish colored dots under the tongue would show a strong potential of heavy metal toxicity or perhaps chemical or environmental toxicity as well.

There are also quite a few little “spider” veins branching off from the two primary veins, which would also show the potential of toxicity impacting liver congestion.

And the problems with this can even be so much greater.

If you’re dealing with liver congestion, this impacts more than just your liver.

The liver is a metabolically active organ responsible for many necessary life functions.

Primary Functions of the Liver

  • Bile production and excretion
  • Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs
  • Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
  • Enzyme activation
  • Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals
  • Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors
  • Blood detoxification and purification

On top of this, if the liver is congested it puts so much more pressure on the other systems of detoxification and drainage, such as your kidneys, lymph, lungs and skin.

So if you notice some of these signs under your tongue, look a bit deeper for yourself.

I recommend a test referred to as a Urine Porphyrin Test.

The Porphyrins Profile can help identify the severity of heavy metal toxicity or organic chemical exposure in patients. Chemical exposure and a heavy toxic burden can have physiological effects resulting in impaired metabolism and cellular function.

Why Evaluate Porphyrins?

Porphyrins are proteins involved in the formation of heme measured in urine. Heme is essential for the proper function of many proteins including oxygen transport, energy production, and detoxification. Proper porphyrin production is essential for our body’s capacity to detoxify toxins.

Porphyrins are particularly well suited for assessing heavy metal toxicity. First, the heme pathway is a constantly-changing pathway that is active in almost every cell of the body. Any disturbance in the pathway tends to cause rapid and relatively large accumulations of intermediates, such as porphyrins. Second, the enzymes of the pathway are widely distributed in human tissues, and are highly sensitive to the presence of various toxins, creating the large accumulation of porphyrins in the pathway.

Symptoms of toxicity:

  • Fatigue/weakness
  • Chemical sensitivity
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Memory loss
  • Insomnia
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet
  • Tremors
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Loss of appetite
